These patterns outline diminished arpeggios.  The tones of the diminished arpeggio are all a minor 3rd apart.  Diminished chords are also a minor 3rd apart, the same shape can be played symmetrically up/down the guitar fret board.  Each chord contains the same series of tones.  Each chord is named after the root note.
