Barney KessellNotation of scales is a worthwhile exercise; it improves your familiarity and understanding of scale structures. The Bebop major mode has both a flat 7 and a natural 7 (minor and major 7) While writing out the modes of the other Bebop modes you’ll realise that every mode has a major and minor 7th.

The modes of the Bebop major scale are exactly the same as regular modes: Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian with an extra chromatic note a semi tone below the root.

Anatomy of a Bebop Solo: Remo Palmier – Groovin’ High

Remo Palmieri was a jazz guitarist who gained some attention in the 1940s. He played with many jazz greats including Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Coleman Hawkins, Pearl Bailey, Billie Holiday, Red Norvo, and Sarah Vaughan. Palmier was one of the first guitarists to build on the ideas of Charlie Christian.

This is a tutorial on Remo Palmier’s solo on ‘Groovin’ High‘.
This solo is a great one to learn when developing bebop vocabulary. It’s quite short (only half a chorus) and is relatively easy to learn and play but includes some classic bebop phrases.

This is Remo’s solo:

Before learning the solo, listen to the recording, learn the chords and melody until you can comfortably play along.

Let’s analyse some of the ideas Remo applies in this solo.

Phrase 1:remo palmier groovin high solo phrase one
Remo starts out with this phrase over Eb Major 7. He mixes a chromatic passage with some notes separated by larger intervals which creates interest. Notice how he outlines the sound of the Am7 – D7 chord in the second bar with a single note then leaves space. Remo’s use of space is similar to the approach used by horn players and gives the solo a strong feeling of structure.

Phrase 2:
remo palmier groovin high solo phrase 2

From the 4th bar Remo ascends a D7 Arpeggio then seamlessly links this run to a Eb major bebop scale over the Eb Major 7 chord. Bebop players didn’t always outline every chord. Leaving some space and outlining the 5 chord only in a II V I can help you create more flowing dynamic lines. The run over EbM7 is similar to the the beginning of Charlie Parker’s ‘Donna Lee’. In bar 7, Remo plays a line over Gm7 based on a descending arpeggio very reminiscent of Charlie Christian’s playing.

Phrase 3:
remo palmier groovin high solo phrase 3

In the final phrase, Remo anticipates the change to Fm7 by playing an Ab Major 7 arpeggio. It doesn’t really fit over the F7 chord because Ab is the flat 3rd but it works as a passing tone. This line follows the classic bebop approach of arpeggio up (bebop) scale down. That’s it! Apparently Dizzy Gillespie rearranged the tune after the original recording to allow Remo a solo; a shame he only allowed for half a chorus!

Bebop scales:
Major bebop: 1 2 3 4 b5 5 6 7 8
Dominant bebop: 1 2 3 4 5 6 b7 7 8
Minor bebop: 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7 7 8

Try practicing these over a II V I progression:
||      Dm7       |       G7    |      CMaj7      |                    |

|| D minor bebop scale   | G dominant bebop scale  | C major bebop scale |

You can use just the G dominant bebop scale over both Dm7 and G7. However, you sometimes want to outline the sound of a minor chord, so the minor bebop scale is used.

Try adding some tension by playing the altered scale over the V chord (G7). This is like Ab minor melodic, but starting and ending on G. As in Remo’s solo, try using just this scale over the II V chords. Placement of space is also very important; Remo’s solo offers some great examples of how to make this work.

G7 altered scale: G Ab Bb B C# Eb F G
That’s: 1 b2 b3 3 #4 #5 b7

Guitar Sounds from Lenny Breau

The famous cascading artificial harmonics effect. I always found this effect very impressive when played by guitarists such as Ted Greene, Chet Atkins, Tommy Emmanuel and Lenny Breau. This technique involves alternately picking artificial harmonics and regular chord tones. It’s actually not as difficult as it looks once you get the hang of it. In these examples, Rich Severson who worked in a guitar store with Ted Greene shows how it’s done.

“Tommy Emmanuel describes cascading harmonics as a “waterfalling sound”—the notes trickle down in a stream of sound. In its basic form, it is a sequence (usually fast) of a right – hand harmonic plucked by the thumb followed by a non – harmonic note plucked with the “a” finger. They are most effective when the left hand holds some form of a lush 9th, 13th, diminished, or augmented chord.”

George_Harrison_SitarIn his video on pentatonic scales” Dean Brown outlines some exotic sounds using modes including:

  • playing a B Major pentatonic over an E Major 7 chord.
  • playing an F# Major pentatonic (E Lydian Major 7) over an E Major 7 chord.

You can create some interesting lines with these ideas, however, the sound I really find interesting is using a minor pentatonic with a raised 3rd.

It’s a very simple idea yet very effective. The following diagram is a comparison of the A minor pentatonic scale, A pentatonic scale with raised 3rd, A7 arpeggio and the Mixolydian mode.

Pentatonic_Major_3
comparison of minor pentatonic, #3 pentatonic, arpeggio & scale

The pentatonic with raised 3 is quite similar to dominant 7 arpeggio; the only difference is that the pentatonic with raised 3 also includes the 4th. This allows quite an unusual sound. To me it sounds quite Indian and instantly reminded me of The Beatles song “Within You, Without You” by George Harrison. (Someone on YouTube commented that Dean Brown looks like George Harrison; I’m inclined to agree). It makes me think that George Harrison must have been aware of this scale when he wrote this song. It has a strong Indian but this is created by the dominant 7 sound.

I’ve tabbed out my version of “Within You, Without You”. I play this with a Travis picking approach but I’ve just tabbed chords and melody. I’ve used A as the key as this works well with open strings. A capo on the 3rd fret will transpose this to the original key of C.

Another exotic sounding scale that can be used to add interest to improvisation is the Phrygian Dominant scale. (5th mode of the harmonic minor scale formula: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8) . Sometimes referred to as ‘The Heavy Metal Scale’, it has a dark, classical flavour.
The formula for the Phrygian Dominant is 1 – ♭2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – ♭6 – ♭7 – 1

Play the A harmonic minor scale over an E major chord and you’ll be playing the Phrygian Dominant mode. This tutorial provides some excellent examples:

Other exotic scales worth exploring are:

Arabian 1     2    b3    4   #4   #5     6      7   minor
Gypsy 1     2    b3  #4             5    b6     7   minor
Romanian 1     2    b3  #4             5     6     b7   minor
Indian 1   b2             4              5    b6   neutral (no 3rd)
Indian 1   b2   b3     4             5     b6   b7   minor
Persian 1   b2     3      4           b5    b6    7   major
Byzantine 1   b2     3      4            5     b6    7   major
Oriental 1  b2      3      4           b5     6    b7   dominant
Jewish (Phrygian Dominant) 1  b2      3      4            5    b6    b7   dominant
Japanese 1   2                4             5   b6  neutral (no 3rd)

Charlie Parker quoteMiles Davis once said, “You can tell the history of jazz in four words: Louis Armstrong. Charlie Parker.” These artists redefined jazz and changed the course of modern music. http://ow.ly/4mIaUP Learning their lines and transcribing their solos while understanding the related harmonic theory is essential to the development of authentic jazz vocabulary and technique. Learning from horn players is particularly helpful for guitarists. Horn players tend to approach harmony differently as they are not constrained by the fret board grid. Here are some useful online resources for learning Charlie Parker lines for guitar. I’ve found these resources particularly helpful.

Billie’s Bounce‘: How to play Billie’s Bounce by Charlie Parker on ‪#‎Guitar‬

This is a great tutorial which shows how to play Bird’s ‘Billie’s Bounce’ solo in a series of easy to learn licks. Includes nice hand written tabs. A great Bebop blues tune, essential to the repertoire of any aspiring jazz guitarist.

It’s very helpful to compare the guitar lines to the original solo: https://youtu.be/S4mRaEzwTYo?t=41 Charlie Parker‘s phrasing transforms a series of notes into something very special.

The more I learn and practice lines like this, the more I realise just how special Charlie Parker‘s music is. Every phrase is gold!

Blues for Alice‘:

Blues for Alice Charlie Parker melody tabs tablature chords
My chart for Blues for Alice head with tabs

this tune is an example of ‘Bird changes’. The Blues for Alice changes, Bird changes, ‘Bird Blues’, or ‘New York Blues changes‘, is a chord progression, often named after Charlie Parker (“Bird”), which is a variation of the twelve-bar blues. The progression uses a series of sequential II-V or secondary II-V progressions, and has been used in pieces such as Parker’s “Blues for Alice”. Toots Thielemans’s “Bluesette” and Parker’s “Confirmation” also have similar progressions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird_changes

MrBebopguitar plays Joe Pass ‘Modern Blues’; same chord progression as ‘Blues for Alice’ tabs in the video.

Dimitris Tsiabaos ‘Blues For Alice’ by Charlie Parker, and solo Joe Pass, guitar style. No tabs with this but Dimitris plays the head and plays through the lines nice and slow.

wes_posterized_smlRecently I tried to find music for Wes Montgomery‘s ‘D Natural Blues‘; a really fun tune to play with solo lines very representative of Wes’ distinctive style. Unable to find a suitable sheet free, I tried https://www.sheetmusicdirect.com

Here you can find digital sheet music for many tunes by Wes Montgomery such as Days Of Wine And Roses, Full House, Four On Six, Airegin, Westcoast Blues and many more. There is a huge selection of tabs and notation and if you download the Scorch plugin you can play the notation and slow the tempo.

It costs around £0.99 per tune and this allows you one print. You can’t print to pdf or to file etc. You can of course print to a printer then scan the pages to create a pdf. Considering the quality and accuracy of the notation and tabs and the convenience of the online player, I’m thinking £0.99 per tune is pretty good value.

How many times have you watched a really impressive tutorial on YouTube etc. then read in the comments and endless list of questions like “What gear are you using?”,”What kind of guitar, amp, effects unit etc. is that?” The artist featured in the video, which of course was time consuming to produce, then has to waste additional effort listing all the equipment used. Questions about the actual technique in question often seem to be relatively rare. While good choices with musical equipment are important they aren’t everything. The reason the player in the video sounds impressive is because they have highly developed technical skills.

I used to spend a great deal of time collecting guitar effects and accessories. When you’re new to an instrument, buying it a few presents can be fun and can help you to define a distinctive sound.  One day while browsing for new effects in a music store I heard the salesman ask someone “Why not just buy yourself a multi-effects pedal instead of buying more pedals?” The guy replied “I already have three of those.” Before long, I realised that no matter how much money I spent on effects there was no magic combination that will magically transform your playing. The time you are spending playing around with effects etc. would probably be much better spent practicing technique.

When I became more serious about jazz guitar playing, I found that adding any effect, even on a very subtle level actually detracted from the sound I wanted. The unadorned sound of a semi acoustic jazz box and a decent amplifier is all you need. I found this quite liberating after all the time I had spend setting up before rock gigs. With my jazz box, all you need to do is plug in, tune up and play.

Peavey Vypyr 75 75W 1×12 Guitar Combo Amp: Featuring 24 amp channel models–both the clean and distorted channels of 12 popular amps for the first time anywhere-plus 11 editable preamp “stomp box” effects and 11 editable post-amp “rack” effects with dual-parameter control.

My advice is that you buy the best guitar, amplifier and accessories that you can afford. Buy a limited range of effects that suit the style of music you play. Experiment with your sound until you find something that complements your playing style. Distortion/fuzz, delay and reverb, pitch effects like phaser, flanger, chorus, pitch shift etc. can enhance your guitar sound and are essential for most modern styles. Be subtle; less is more. Too much effect will detract from your playing more than it will enhance it. Consider buying a modelling amplifier which can model the sound of vintage valve amps and include a range of inbuilt effects. Digital effects for recording software have become a great deal cheaper (Audacity is a basic, free recording application and includes a huge range of effects.) Effects can be added and modified in post production.

But don’t just take my word for it. Wes Montgomery (considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time) was not interested at all in guitar equipment, he saw his guitar as a tool to do the job. Much of We Montgomery highly disnctive and beautiful tone was due to the way he played. Wes of course played with the fleshy part of his thumb rather than a pick which creates a mellow sound; particularly well suited for octave playing. During his entire career Wes Montgomery played almost exclusively on a Gibson L-5 (cutaway electric spanish) from 1963. He wasn’t really interested in equipment. In his own words: “I got a standard box. I don’t never want nothing special. Then if I drop my box, I can borrow somebody else’s.” – Read more about the gear Wes Montgomery used at: http://www.jazzguitar.be/wes_montgomery_guitar.html#sthash.WBKzStun.dpuf (Irony completely intentional 😉

jason_leeRemember life before the internet? Remember going into music stores and trying to memorise pages from tuition books because you couldn’t afford to buy them? More recently I have spent a great deal of time trawling YouTube and the web trying to answer this question; is it possible to learn advanced guitar online for free? Apart from having to repeatedly endure ads for products like ‘Yousician’ I’ve found this quest to be largely very rewarding and have managed to improve my playing no end.

Of course the quality of the material tends to vary but there is undoubtedly a wealth of brilliant resources online which, if well chosen can help anyone progress. The Guitar Cosmos Facebook Page features videos and web resources which I have personally tried out and recommend in a range of styles and levels. Hopefully aspiring guitarists will find this record useful.

As well as finding a great many useful resources I’ve also found a few that I’ve found a bit amusing. Here’s a small selection:

  1. Old Country Guitar Solo | 48 Simply Fantastic Country Guitar LicksDoug Seven presents some great country guitar tutorials but he seems to have been in something of an enhanced state of mind for this one:
  2. Guitar Lesson Learn how to play fun Spaghetti Western alternative surf electric guitar riffs‘ by rockongoodpeople. This guy makes the list for his hair alone…
  3. Joe Diorio F Blues‘ Joe is undoubtedly a brilliant player and teacher but I found his body language in this clip a bit odd!
  4. Mastering the iim7b5-V7b9 by Les Wise‘ Les Wise is also a great guitarist and teacher but again, I couldn’t help but find his expressions in this clip just a bit amusing. I’m told I tend to pull faces like this when playing…

david_bowie_ziggy_stardustRIP David Bowie. Bowie was associated with many brilliant guitarists during his career, covering a range of styles, from Mick Ronson‘s glam rock guitar during the Ziggy Stardust period to Carlos Alomar‘s funk grooves on Young Americans and Station to Station, Adrian Belew and Robert Fripp’s outside, avant guarde sounds during the ‘Berlin‘ phase and Stevie Ray Vaughan‘s stylings on ‘Let’s Dance’.

David Bowie was (I’m really finding it difficult and weird to have to talk about him in past tense!) also an excellent guitarist in his own right, and his simple, highly melodic approach added highlights to many of his hits. I’ve always loved Bowie’s guitar solo on ‘Space Oddity’; the way he hangs on that E7 chord. (Click here for video tutorial). Bowie played all the guitar on ‘Diamond Dogs’, producing what NME critics Roy Carr and Charles Shaar Murray described as a “scratchy, raucous, semi-amateurish sound that gave the album much of its characteristic flavour” (source: Wikipedia). ‘Eight Line Poem‘ from ‘Hunky Dory’ is a poignant piece of country rock playing. (Click here for video cover).

Here’s a nice tutorial on how to play the funky guitar from Bowie’s first American hit, ‘Fame’ from ‘Young Americans’. All three guitar parts are included; great fun to play: (Click here for video tutorial)

Copyright is a form of intellectual property protection for a variety of literary and artistic endeavours. Everyone who has used the internet has at one time or another copied material illegally. This is due to the popular misconception, that once material is posted to the internet it can be freely copied: this not the case. Unless the author of the material has stated that is available for public use, then permission has to be obtained from the author for the material to be used.
File sharing sites, is another issue that concerning copyright laws. These sites/programs allow people to share material over the internet, this allows for copyrighted material to be shared and copied form one person to another. Some people believe this is okay as there is no transaction of money for the material: this is not true. File sharing is one of the biggest problems concerning copyright laws on the internet as there is no way to monitor all the information being shared between people and block and copyrighted material from being sent.
Now days because it is so easy to share copyrighted material over the internet and it is so frequently done many people do not see it as a crime that affects the authors finically. Although many people would not steal a cd from a store, download free music from the internet is socially acceptable on the internet.
The reason why people copy and break copyright laws is because they don’t want to pay for it. What most people don’t think about while there waiting happily as their download finishes, is that they are part of a mass group that is stealing from the author. This author has probably spent many hours of work developing a program hoping that in the end he can share with all of us and maybe get paid, to earn a living so he can continue provide us with software we want and need. But all those people who pirate software and wish for everything on the internet to be free or cheaper, are really just saying , we value what you have created but could you just do it for free? Would you do your job for free? Or cheaper? Highly unlikely, but that being said people that claim authors aren’t protecting their material enough, well all that can be said about that is, if people really want something enough, they’ll do anything, even if it might cost them jail time or a $50,000 fine.

The Great White Fleet Begins Its Circumnavigation of the Globe (1907)
Just seven years before the start of World War I, a fleet of 16 American battleships took part in a 14-month, round-the-world voyage ordered by US President Theodore Roosevelt as a peaceful display of American naval power. Later known as the "Great White Fleet," the ships were painted white except for the gilded scrollwork on their bows. In ports around the world, thousands of people turned out to see the ships when they arrived. Why did several of the ships make an unscheduled stop in Italy? Discuss

As Republican tax vote nears, more senators waverBy Richard Cowan and David Morgan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump's drive to win passage of a sweeping Republican tax bill in the U.S. Congress hit potential obstacles on Thursday as two more Republican senators insisted on changes, joining a list of lawmakers whose support is uncertain. Florida's Marco Rubio, a former presidential contender, told reporters on Capitol Hill that if the bill's proposed refundability to taxpayers of the child tax credit is not expanded, "I'm a no ... It has to be higher than $1,100." Rubio and Mike Lee of Utah are in talks with other senators about expanding child tax credit refundability, said Conn Carroll, a Lee spokesman.

Lebanon-Syria border crossing to reopen

Lebanon-Syria border crossing to reopenLebanon and Syria said Thursday they will reopen a border crossing closed five years ago, in another sign of the Syrian government's increasing control over its territory. The crossing, called Al-Qaa in Lebanon and Jussiyeh in Syria, was closed in 2012 as fighting raged between President Bashar al-Assad's forces and rebel fighters seeking his overthrow. Assad's regime has since reclaimed most of the territory once held by the rebels, thanks to a Russian military campaign in support of his forces and deep divisions among the rebels.

Are the U.S. Marines Dying?

Are the U.S. Marines Dying? The U.S. Marine Corps is arguably the best amphibious-warfare force in the world. The issue is that relentless overseas commitments have strained marine resources so badly that it can’t conduct the other training that it needs to maintain its combat edge. A review of readiness data from 2014 to 2016 revealed that “Marine Corps units were unable to fully accomplish training for other amphibious operations priorities,” according to the GAO report.

Indian minister warns Bollywood heavyweights over sexual exploitation

Indian minister warns Bollywood heavyweights over sexual exploitationIn a rare rebuke, an Indian minister on Thursday warned the country’s Bollywood film industry to comply with strict measures to combat sexual harassment, following the Harvey Weinstein scandal. Maneka Gandhi, India’s federal Minister for Women and Child Development, took the unusual step of writing to 24 powerful Bollywood film producers, demanding they comply with Indian sexual harassment legislation to ensure a "safe, secure and inclusive work environment” for all employees. The letter was sent to major industry players, such as actors Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, as well as director Karan Johar.  “The aim of this law is to ensure that no woman is sexually harassed at her workplace,” Ms Gandhi said in her letter. "It is to be followed in letter and spirit by all organisations in the country," she added. "Bollywood filmmakers are ethically and legally accountable for the safety of not only their direct employees but of all outsourced and temporary staff as well." Britain's Prince William shakes hands with Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan Credit: REUTERS/Rafiq Maqbool/Pool It is understood that more letters will be sent to other film producers.  Bollywood remains hugely male dominated, with men making up the vast majority of directors and veteran stars. The small handful of female directors are mostly confined to regional cinema.  After the Weinstein allegations broke, people in the film business in India were unconvinced they would have a #MeToo moment.   "What can we do?" Mukesh Bhatt, who co-heads production house Vishesh Films said. “We cannot keep moral cops outside every film office to see that no girl is being exploited.” Alankrita Shrivastava, director of critically acclaimed film Lipstick Under my Burkha said a women's protest movement was unlikely to happen in conservative Indian society. “The way men are being called out in Hollywood right now, I don’t know if it can happen in India.”  “In terms of how our psychology is, how patriarchy functions, it is much more entrenched,” she added. However, Ms Gandhi's stark warning gives women in Bollywood hope that their concerns will be heard. Last month Bollywood actress Swara Bhaskar told a Mumbai tabloid she had been turned down for "several roles" as she did not give in to "unwanted advances" by producers and directors. Ms Bhaskar, 29, urged aspiring actresses to turn down roles rather than resort to the so-called "casting couch" to exchange sexual favours to advance their careers. Thousands of young Indian girls and boys gravitate to Bollywood every year with the aim of becoming actors. Swara Bhaskar complained of Bollywood's casting-couch culture Credit: Dave J Hogan/Getty Images They are vulnerable to sexual exploitation, not only by unscrupulous agents promising them roles which they never get, but also by lesser known stars, producers and directors making similar promises.   Hopefuls are fearful of reporting inappropriate behaviour in case it ruins their chances of breaking into Bollywood. “It is always very subtle,” Ms Bhaskar said this week. “People try to insinuate that there are 10,000 girls for one role – so what can you do?” In the wake of the #MeToo scandal, actresses including Kalki Koechlin and Richa Chadha called on Bollywood to improve its record in standing up for victims of sexual harassment and exploitation.  Sexual harassment legislation was passed in India in 2013, in response to the fatal gang rape of a 23-year old medical student on a bus in Delhi in December 2012. In November Ms Gandhi launched the online Sexual Harassment electronic-Box (SHe-Box) to register sexual harassment complaints in the workplace and to ensure the implementation of the 2013 law. She also urged all company directors to report sexual harassment cases, but activists said many victims were hesitant to register their complaints, afraid their future careers would be curtailed. Women's rights activists maintain that only 10 per cent of rape and other sexual harassment cases ever get reported in India.

14 years after he went missing in Africa, I think my brother is still alive

14 years after he went missing in Africa, I think my brother is still aliveChristmas Charity Appeal banner 2017 It was when the letters stopped arriving that Christian Velten’s family knew something had gone terribly wrong.  Armed with a video camera, the 27-year-old had embarked on a six-month expedition through West Africa, along the banks of the River Niger, retracing the steps of his hero, the 18th century Scottish explorer Mungo Park. He made his way alone on foot, by donkey, or in a canoe from Gambia, through Senegal, and Mali, stopping along the way to stay with villagers. Each time he moved on, Christian would give the children his address back in England, telling them to write. “Cards kept coming to the house from kids he’d met,” says his sister Hannah, who has spent the past 14 years tirelessly searching for her brother. “At some point the letters stopped.” Even though he was travelling through remote African countryside, Christian had still managed to keep in contact with his family. “When he phoned Mum and Dad for the last time, it was just before their birthdays,” Hannah tells me, as we talk in the living room of the East Sussex home she shares with her husband Grant and children Freya, 6, and Cameron, 9. “When he didn’t get on his plane home, we realised pretty quickly something had gone wrong.” Christian's sister Hannah believes he is alive and is waiting for him to come forward Credit: Christopher Pledger  That final phone call came on March 23, 2003 and Christian has been missing ever since. In that time, the search to find him has taken innumerable twists and turns. The early years were fraught with fear and frustration, as Hannah’s parents, Pauline and Tim, frantically led the charge to find their son. Confronted with Foreign Office red tape, they took matters into their own hands, putting out appeals in the African and British press and sending a team, led by one of his friends, to search for Christian on the ground. At one point, they even enlisted the help of a Malian village chieftain.  “Everything went against us,” says Hannah, cradling a mug of tea, as she takes me through the events which have shaped her adult life. “Nothing you try works and fear kicks in.”  For years, the race to trace Christian led them to dead ends, each more painful than the last. It always went the same way: a renewed appeal would spark a sighting - a lone white male seen walking near the river, or a bedraggled figure who rode the bus every day. Moments of hope, cruelly shattered when the trail went quiet. Telegraph Christmas Appeal 2017 | What are the charities? “That desperate feeling is exhausting,” adds Hannah. “I realise, now I’m a mum myself, just how awful that first search was for my parents.” In 2015, on Christian’s 40th birthday, the family decided to throw a party. It was a way to celebrate the man who had been absent from their lives for more than a decade. “The thing is, you don’t have a funeral,” says Hannah. “You go through a grief process, but you’re in limbo.”  As the years and milestones passed, the hope of finding him seemed more and more remote. Yet, on Boxing Day in 2015, as she trudged around the fields near her parents’ Sussex home, trying to walk off the sadness of another Christmas without her brother, Hannah suddenly felt strangely upbeat about finding him. Her dad was less so. “He told me: ‘I think if Christian isn’t found by next New Year then I’m going to give up hope. It’s just too painful.’” Then, three months later, there was a fresh sighting. One so clear that it would set into motion a new search, culminating in the realistion that Christian is almost certainly alive.  Sightings of Chris have come in waves over the years, and Hannah has learnt how to work out when someone isn't being truthful Credit: Christopher Pledger  In early 2016, Hannah had set up ‘Searching for Chris’ pages on social media, renewing interest in their story. A friend got in touch to say that a contact in Kenya had recognised Christian’s picture on Facebook. Raabia Hawa, a prominent conservationist, told how two years before, a man with that very same profile picture had sent her a friend request on Facebook, from a now defunct account.  Hannah realised that the picture (an old one from her website), could have been downloaded by Christian, who may have found it when looking himself up online. Before he went missing, Christian had been a keen conservationist. Was it possible he had reached out to Raabia to ask for advice? With renewed energy, Hannah wrote about the connection on Facebook and sightings came in thick and fast from Nairobi. People had seen Christian as a homeless man in the city’s slums, as a white preacher on a bus, in a hotel.  It would have been easy to take them as nothing more than fantasies or false hope from strangers. But instead, Hannah chose to treat each one as a possible lead, and a new picture began to form.  “Your intuition kicks in. It was like I was an arrow locked on a target,” she says. The last sighting of Christian was in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2015 Credit: Hannah Velten One woman said she had seen Christian begging in Accra, Ghana, in 2005, telling Hannah: “He spoke with a British accent. He said he was begging to raise money for a ticket back home. What makes me 80 per cent sure it’s your brother was what he said as he appealed for money: ‘Are you a Christian, missy? Can you help me please? My name is Christian.’” Hannah now believes that, while travelling, Christian was attacked - but that someone found and looked after him. Somehow, after all these years, she thinks, he has ended up in Kenya. “For some time, he may not have known who he was. He must have been ill for many years. But I think he is now aware that we are looking for him. “It wouldn’t have been his choice to go missing,” she adds. “Something terrible happened.” It raises the hardest question of all: is it possible that Christian doesn’t want to be found? It is a prospect Hannah has been forced to grapple with, and she has come to terms with the idea that her brother may have chosen not to get in touch. After all, she explains, 14 years is a long time - especially when you have been alone and confused. It is possible that the thought of simply walking back into his old life feels too overwhelming.  “But I have faith that he will [be found]. That’s the bit that drives you insane, the idea that he could just ring any second now. He could turn up on the doorstep.” Read more | Telegraph Christmas Charity Appeal As well as being a devoted sister, Hannah, 42, runs a publishing company with her husband. Through it all, she has kept the surname Velten, to make it easier for Christian to trace her. It is clear that this latest push to find her brother has been a terrible strain. “It’s almost the worst thing that you could think of in terms of a family,” she tells me, stroking the labrador curled beside her on the sofa, as she fights back tears. “It is a nightmare. If you just think how you feel when you lose your child in the supermarket, that sheer panic - we have felt that for nearly 15 years. “All that time, we thought he was dead…” she trails off, trying to compose herself. “You’d toast him at Christmas, we always talked about him, but the hope was flickering.” She desperately wants Christian to meet her children, who have heard so much about their uncle. “It’s my biggest sadness now, what my kids are missing, because he would be a fabulous uncle. I’m sad for mum and dad and I’m sad for Christian and the life he would have had.” For now, all she can do is wait.  “When the phone rings now, I don’t expect it to be him. So when he does call, it will be out of the blue.” Is she fearful of all the complications that his sudden appearance could bring with it?  “After 14 years he is going to have changed so much. But he’s my brother, I love him. It’s what I want.” If you would like to know more about Christian's story, or if you think you can help in any way, please visit the 'Searching for Chris Velten' Facebook page.  Missing People is a beneficiary of this year’s Telegraph’s Christmas Charity Appeal.
